Anne Norman Shakuhachi Concert
24 September 2005 - 2 October 2005
A rare and special opportunity to hear the haunting and evocative shakuhachi of Anne Norman, a leading exponent from Australia and one of the world's few women masters of the ancient instrument, in concert in Hiroshima on 2nd October, 2005.
Originally trained on flute, Anne took up the shakuhachi in 1986 in Kobe under Nakamura Shindo and later studied under Tajima Tadashi in Osaka. In 1990 she received a grant from the Japanese Government to study shakuhachi with Living National Treasure Yamaguchi Goro at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music, she has an MA in ethnomusicology and is a composer, improviser and performer of shakuhachi.
The concert will cover a range of inspirations from Honkyoku-Zen meditations to JS Bach. The repertoire includes "Tsuru no Sugomori" (Nesting Cranes), "Shika no Tone" (Distant Cry of Deer), "Makiri", "Haru no Umi" (Spring Sea), "Kaze no Uta", JS Bach's Sonata in A minor on shakuhachi, improvisations with didjeridu, contemporary works by living Japanese composers, duos with koto and the world premier composition for shakuhachi ensemble by Anne for the Hiroshima Shakuhachi Club.
Collaborating with artists from a variety of disciplines in many musical styles and in multi-media theatre events, Anne's shakuhachi has featured on many Cds, in Australian film sound tracks, and has been integral to making innovative Australian music.
Her current concert tour travels from Melbourne to Tokyo, Hiroshima, Kumamoto, then to Oregon USA. In 2006 she is invited to play at the International Shakuhachi Festival in New York.
