Australian Picture Book Exhibition

11 June 2005 - 26 June 2005

Artworks from award-winning picture books

The Australian Children's Picture Book Exhibition is a display of artworks from award-winning and popular contemporary Australian picture books. As well as showcasing the fabulous artwork from these appealing books, the exhibition will introduce visitors to Australian landscape and culture. Australian picture books are vibrant, fun and visually exciting and have won a place in the hearts of Japanese children and adults alike, and this exhibition includes many winners of the Japan Library Association Best Translated Picture Book.

The artists featured are from all over Australia and represent a wide variety of illustration styles. They are the creators of books such as Fox, The Red Tree, Possum Magic, Diary of a Wombat and A Year on our Farm. To coincide with the exhibition, award-winning Australian author/illustrators Alison Lester and Ron Brooks will conduct picture book workshops for children of 5-12 years. The workshops will showcase the beautiful artwork of Alison and Ron's books, featuring the Australian landscape and culture, and will teach children how books are made - from beginning to end. Children can also create their very own picture book.

Alison Lester
Alison Lester trained as a secondary school art teacher, but when her first baby was born, she needed to work from home - she's been writing and illustrating children's books ever since - about twenty-five years. Some of Alison's most loved picture books are Clive Eats Alligators, Imagine, and Celeste sails to Spain, and many have been translated into different languages.

Ron Brooks
Ron Brooks is the illustrator of picture book classics such as John Brown, Rose and the Midnight Cat, and The Bunyip of Berkeley's Creek (written by Jenny Wagner). His recent works such as Old Pig and Fox (written by Margaret Wild) are also modern favourites, and his books have been widely translated.

A three-time winner of the Australian Children's Book Council Picture Book of the Year, Ron also won the 2001 Japan Library Association Best Translated Picture Book for Fox.

Meet Alison and Ron at Aichi Expo!
