Tarryn Gill, The Great Northern

Tarryn Gill, "The Great Northern"
"The Great Northern" is a video work shot on location during a one month residency at the Banff Centre, Alberta, Canada in March 2012. The work responds to local stories of haunting and the uncanny and it forms a visual part of Gill’s current research into psychology and history. It also sites pop culture references such as Kubrick’s "The Shining" (which is based on a murder that occurred at the Banff Springs Hotel - where part of The Great Northern was filmed) and Lynch’s Twin Peaks.
Tarryn Gill (born 1981) holds a BA Fine Arts from Curtin University, Western Australia and has been working since 2001 on an arts practice that encompasses photography, film, live performance, theatre, choreography and design.
Through her collaborations with Pilar Mata Dupont and Hold Your Horses, she has shown work at the Akademie der Kunste, Berlin, Centre Pompidou, Paris; Art Basel, Miami; the 17th Biennale of Sydney, Sydney; QUAD Gallery and The Silk Mill, Derby, United Kingdom; the Art Gallery of Western Australia; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland; Goddard de Fiddes, Perth and the Ian Potter Museum, Melbourne.
During 2012 Tarryn has undertaken two studio residencies: the Banff Centre, Alberta, Canada and the Australia Council Tokyo Studio, Japan. During this time she has been working to develop her solo practice. In January 2013, along with Hold Your Horses, she will be undertaking a research residency at the Freud Museum in London.
