JAAM project public presentation

The JAAM project students gave a public presentation of their art works at the Australia House. The reviewers praised the high quality works and gave constructive advice to the artists.
Tokamachi city mayor visits Australia House

Mr Yoshifumi Sekiguchi, mayor of Tokamachi city visited the Australia House. The mayor was interested to hear from the JAAM project artists about their works.
Workshop "CHANGE THE WORLD - Language and Imagination"

The workshop was held at the Urada Kokusetsu Kanri Centre. Many people from school children to adults enjoyed creating their own art work using their imagination with the JAAM project artists.
JAAM Project: Japan Australia Art Musings Project

A new art residency program "JAAM Project – Japan Australia Art Musings" will be launched at the Australia House in early August. Six young art students from the University of Newcastle in Australia and Tama Art University in Japan will live and work together in a rustic farmhouse in Echigo Tsumari.
The artworks that will result from this project are sure to provide a fascinating insight into both the similarities and the differences between the participants and their respective cultures. Please come and see these young artists in action.

First meeting of the JAAM project
5 August 2010
The first meeting of the students from the University of Newcastle and Tama Art University was held in Tokyo, prior to their departure for the Australia House. They listened attentively the briefing on the Echigo-Tsumari region by the Noubutai staff. They said they were excited about living and creating works together in the Australia House from 9 August.
Exhibition "Double Image – a fusion of two cultures"

These fabric pieces express the links between Japan and Australia in two ways; firstly in the contracting imagery and pictures sitting side by side, secondly in the welding of Japanese silk with Australian merino wool to express the permanent bond between the two countries.

LAFIA Visit

The Leading Australia's Future in Asia Program delegation consisting of senior executives in the Australian government visited Tokamachi on 30 July. They discussed various issues with the local residents, members of the Joetsu Japan-Australia Society and the Australia House artists in residence over a lunch prepared by the Urada community. After visiting Australia House, they called on Tokamachi Mayor Mr Yoshifumi Sekiguchi and thanked him for the wonderful hospitality offered by the Tokamachi people during the day.

Artist-in-residence for 2010

For the open call for a participant to this program, organised by Matsudai Nobutai, we were very pleased to receive so many high quality applications. After a very difficult and close selection, Ms Maude Bath has been chosen as a residence this summer. Ms Bath is a textile artist from South Australia. She and Mr Chris Tugwell, a playwright and novelist will stay at the Australia House and create a series of shoji screens contrasting the natural beauty of the Urada region with the brilliant colours of the Australian outback through exchanges, workshops and an exhibition with local residents.

Tokamachi Mayor and Urada residents visit the Australian Embassy

Tokamachi Mayor Yoshifumi Sekiguchi and members of the Urada community paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Murray McLean at the Ambassador's Residence in Tokyo. Following the success of the 2009 Australia House project, the Ambassador and his guests discussed future plans for the Australia House to ensure that it remains as a permanent venue for exchange between Australians and the people of the Echigo-Tsumari region.
