Welcome to Urada
The Urada region is located in the southwest part of Niigata Prefecture. The Misaka Pass (1135.8 metres) is located in the mountain range that runs to the south of Urada, along the border with Nagano Prefecture and the Shibumi River flows north from these mountains, between the eastern and western parts of the region.
The area is known for its steep terrain, with altitudes ranging from 250 to 800 metres. Villages are nestled on these steep slopes and the landscape evokes images of traditional Japan.
The history of the Urada region dates back to the late Jomon period (from about 2,000 to 1,000 BC). Pottery from this era, and also from the Heian and Muromachi eras, has been discovered here, proving that villages existed in this region at the earliest stages of Japan's history.
Urada is a vibrant community of 437 people living in 167 households located in 12 villages.
