Trent Jansen "The Sign Project" at Design Tide in Tokyo 2005

2 November 2005 - 6 November 2005

Having intrigued audiences by the live construction of his Sign Stools at the furniture showroom Space Furniture in Sydney, from November 2nd - 6th for Tokyo Design Tide 2005, Trent Jansen will launch his Tokyo Sign Project by assembling, exhibiting and selling his stools in store at "LHP" in Harajuku. Jansen will be joined by over 100 other Australian and international artists exhibiting in Tokyo design shops as part of this year's Design Tide in Tokyo 2005 (formerly Tokyo Designers Block).

An opportunity to learn the nature of simple and sustainable design first hand, onlookers may observe Trent constructing small, idiosyncratic and colourful stools imbued with their past lives as road signs. Reconceptualizing the road sign into an exhibited object in a domestic space as a piece of furniture, Trent achieves an unavoidable sense of irony allowing us to reconsider this quotidian icon. With The Sign Stool, Trent Jansen's conceptual recycling of materials in a humanistic manner points the way to the future of design.
