3D animation films from Australia at EPOC in CG vol.6

26 October 2005 - 17 November 2005

"EPOC in CG vol.6", a special festival of the latest computer graphics animation will exhibit two works from the most advanced 3D CG animators in Australia as well as leading animators from Europe and will be screening from the 26th October - 17th November in Tokyo's Shimokitazawa. EPOC showcases the best animations from "Annecy", the famed world animation festival, and will include the winner of the Grand Prix The Adventures of Jasper Morello and Mike Hollands' short comedy Piñata. Screening nine works experimenting in new techniques ranging from straight hand-drawn animation to a mixture of traditional skill and CG, to completely digital works, EPOC promises to be an exciting animation experience.

The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello

3D Animation | 27 mins | Dir: Anthony Lucas | 3D FILMS PTY.LTD/AUSTRALIAN FILM COMMISSION/FILM VICTORIA/SPECIAL BROADCASTING SERVICE

The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello is a 26 minute short feature made in a unique style of silhouette animation developed by director, Anthony Lucas and features the voices of Joel Edgerton (Star Wars-Ep3, King Arthur), Helmut Bakaitis (Matrix 2), Tommy Dysart and Jude Beaumont. This story is the first of a proposed trilogy of short features chronicling the remarkable voyages of Jasper Morello, Aeronaut of the Third Royal Cartographers. Inspired by the work of authors Edgar Alan Poe and Jules Verne, and set in a world of iron dirigibles and steam powered computers, this gothic horror mystery tells the story of Jasper Morello, a disgraced aerial navigator who flees his plague-ridden home on a desperate voyage to redeem himself. Lucas' previous film, Holding Your Breath was shown at Cannes among other international festivals, and noted for its high skill in clay animation techniques. The script is by two-time Augie Award winning writer, Mark Shirrefs and is produced by Susie Campbell and Julia Lucas. Australian animators, coming from schools like the National Institute for Dramatic Arts (NIDA), have been creating CG animation for Hollywood blockbusters such as the latest Star Wars movies (Eps. 1-3).

Piñata

3D Animation | 4 mins | Dir: Mike Hollands | ACT3 ANIMATION/AUSTRALIAN FILM COMMISSION

Piñata, by local animator Mike Hollands, premiered at Annecy and tells a classical tale about a stuffed donkey's search for respect. One small, feisty lolly-stuffed burro has had enough! But one small, determined girl just won't give up.

Pioneer of Australian CG animation, Mike Hollands worked as an animator at the ABC then began his own commercial and visual effects company Video Paintbrush Company. In 1992, he set up ACT3 ANIMATION and made 3DCG animation for films such as Jurassic Park. This is the first self-produced work by Hollands, combining advanced CG techniques with a gentle story-line, and has received high-acclaim at Annecy in France, SIGGRAPH in USA and at the Sydney Film Festival.
