Jack Davis' "Dreamers" presented by Wesley Enoch and Rakutendan
28 September 2005 - 2 October 2005
Director Wesley Enoch from Australia who directed 'Stolen' for the 2002 Tokyo International Art Festival has been invited to co-direct the 5th in a series of Aboriginal contemporary plays presented by Rakutendan theatre production company. Dreamers, written by Jack Davis, translated by Keiji Sawada and directed by Yoshio Wada and Wesley Enoch, will run from 28th September to 2nd October at Nakano Actre Studio.
Brief Outline of The Dreamers:
The time is the 1980s, set in the outskirts of Perth, Australia. Enduring the a abusive reality of rough city living -drunkenness, poverty, police harassment and imprisonment - the story marks the few days during which Uncle Worru passes away. The dying Worru embodies the restless spirit of the Nyoongah people and the lament of an entire generation - its language and cultural identity. That spirit is passed on to Uncle Worru's niece Dolly. The Dreamers was first performed by the Swan River Stage Company in Perth in 1982, with Davis himself playing Worru.
