Benjamin Skepper to perform "Parnassus" on Noh Stage in Shibuya
2 October 2010
Benjamin Skepper, an Australian cello and harpsichord player, composer and producer who is based in Tokyo, will perform on the Noh stage next to the Konno Hachiman Shrine in Shibuya. Skepper will transform the Noh stage into a site-specific performance art space.
"The Parnassus Suite and Selected Sound Works" concert is being held to celebrate the release of Skepper's second solo album "Parnassus", and champagne will be served.
To perform in the 900-year-old shrine's environment, Skepper has created a specialized combination of sound system, electronic equipment, speakers and musical instruments.
Described as “contemporary classical” and “cinematic”, the compositions on Parnassus are for harpsichord, violoncello, toy piano, music boxes, sewing machines and an electronic loop machine.
Skepper will also showcase new sound compositions from his recent tour of Australia and Europe. Using an intricate looping technique, Skepper samples sounds and melodies live, and architecturally constructs a multi-layered, orchestral soundscape that is both composed and improvised.
The event will also feature a gramophone performance by Oui spinning SPs from pre-WWII Japan.
