The Boy From Oz

10 June 2005 - 27 June 2005

From 10 June - 27 June, 'The Boy from Oz' the Broadway musical which made local boy Peter Allen immortally famous in depicting his dramatic life will be performed in Tokyo at the Aoyama Theatre by an all-star Japanese cast.

Peter Allen

Composer of romantic ballads and a flamboyant stage performer, as a child Peter Woolnough began singing in local pubs in 1950s Tenterfield, Australia. Taking a lucky break, Peter formed the Allen Brothers with Chris Bell in the early 60s, and one lucky night on tour at the Hong Kong Hilton, Peter persuaded the legendary Judy Garland to join them on stage. In the spring of 1964 Garland invited the Allen brothers to London and then to be her opening act in New York.

Peter fell in love with Judy's daughter Liza Minelli, but differing lifestyles and Garland's passing away marked the end of their marriage. When the Allen Brothers broke up in the spring of 1970 Peter embarked on a successful solo career in the U.S., and by the early 80s he had released several successful albums, written and performed in Broadway musicals, won an Oscar for song-writing and headlined at Radio City Music Hall, where he danced with the Rockettes.

However a sudden change of fate meant Peter returned to Australia for a triumphant concert at the Sydney Opera House. He died in 1992.
