Dean Bowen Exhibition - "Journey"
9 April 2005 - 1 May 2005
Dean Bowen is undeniably Australian artist with his larrikin humour. And the most notable aspect of his artistic vision is an unique evocation of a universal urban/suburban experience, combined with a strong Australian identity. It is an approach that appeals widely all over Australia, in Europe, and Asia too. Bowen has been working for these 2 years on this Kyoto exhibition at Galerie Miyawaki which celebrates the 10th anniversary of his debut in Japan. A special book "Journey" which becomes a complete documentation of the show is coincidentally published from Galerie Miyawaki.
One of his large size oil paintings "Contemplative Journey" was included in the recent international competition "Renascence" at Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in Kobe. Bowen describes on his theme "Journey" philosophically as the following lines; "Our travels are often contemplative journeys. Whether in a crowded city or through open rural landscapes our thoughts move with us.
The meditative nature of travel, both through long journeys or arduous challenges often enhances our spirituality and revives our imagination, reinvigorating us. We watch meditatively, captivated and transfixed by the passing parade of both landscape and humanity. The journey acts as a symbol, both physically and psychologically, taking us beyond ourselves, enhancing and reminding us of the preciousness of life."
