Sir Neil Currie Australian Studies Awards

The Australia-Japan Foundation established the Sir Neil Currie Australian Studies Award Program in 2000 to develop studies of Australia in Japan. These Awards commemorate the life of Sir Neil Currie, former Australian Ambassador to Japan and former Chairman of the Foundation.

Overview

The Award is provided within four categories including newly established Early Career Researchers Support Program, Post Graduate Study and Research Award, Curriculum Development Award and Publications Award.

The Foundation welcomes good quality proposals from a broad range of areas. Applications for research in the following areas are particularly encouraged.

  • Australia-Japan relationship within the Asia-Pacific region
  • Trade, economics, politics
  • Environment
  • Social issues (e.g. aging, women's issues, education)

Early Career Research Support Program Awards: Travel Funds

The newly established program awards are designed to provide travel funds from Japan to Australia, with aim to encourage promising early career researchers in Japan to expand their research networks and capabilities through participation at a relevant conference, symposium or workshop in Australia to further their research interests and to build academic networks with Australian researchers. Applicants may also include a relevant short research program during their visit to Australia. Priority may be given to applicants who are presenting papers based on their research at a participating conference.

Value of award:

  • Up to A$ 2,500 per awardee

Post Graduate Study and Research Award Program

This award aims to increase understanding of Australia in Japan and provides financial support to Japanese scholars to undertake research at an Australian University or research institution.

Value of award:

  • Research Program: up to AUD 10,000 for between three to six months

Curriculum Development Award

The Curriculum Development Award provides financial assistance to Japanese academics to develop curriculum that furthers the study and understanding of Australia in Japan (including the applications to invite Australian academics to hold lectures at Japanese universities). The Foundation welcomes the applications from Australia in partnership with Japanese institutions.

Value of award:

Up to AUD 20,000 per awardee

Publications Award

The Publication Award supports publication of quality books related to Australian studies written in the Japanese language.

Value of award:

up to AUD 10,000 per publication
