The 2006 Australia-Japan Year of Exchange (YOE), commemorating the 30th anniversary of the signing of the 1976 Basic
Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Australia and Japan, is well under way.
The aim of the year is to promote friendship, deeper mutual understanding and cooperation between Australia and Japan, especially at the grass roots level. Over 800 were endorsed to take place in various locations in Australia and Japan throughout 2006.
This site focuses on events and activities that are taking place in Japan during the Year of Exchange and showcase Australia in some way. Events showcasing Japan in Australia are the responsibility of the Japanese authorities. For information on these events in Australia please refer to the agencies listed on the links page.
Many people have responded positively to the call to present their own
events. So much so, that over 800 events have been held in Australia and
Japan. We are most grateful to everyone for their wonderful cooperation.
The various activities have helped bring Australians and Japanese closer
together.
The YOE is starting to draw to a close. But there are still some events
to be held. Please continue to support the YOE until the end of the year
by participating in YOE activities. We feature some of these events below
under latest information. You will also find an updated list of events
here.

Friendship and co-operation: the 1976 Basic Treaty between Australia and Japan[Issued 19 December 2006] In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation between Australia and Japan, a new book has been published by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The book tells the story of the long and often complicated process by which the treaty came to life. The many difficult negotiations ended successfully with an agreement that has led to stronger bonds between the two countries; an agreement that continues today to prove that the basis of relations between Australia and Japan shall be enduring peace and friendship. Program
Australian and Japanese groups and organisations are invited and encouraged to participate in the 2006 YOE by organising their own events and exchanges that celebrate the bilateral relationship.
The 2006 Year of Exchange logo was designed
by Mr Ivo Widjaja, a doctoral student and digital artist from Melbourne,
Australia. The winning logo entry features the stylised and interconnected
letters A and J in the form of a yellow ochre stipple and a red oriental
brushstroke. The logo represents the fusion of two art traditions.
Individuals and organisations wishing to obtain official endorsement for an event that will take place in Japan and that will showcase Australia or celebrate the bilateral relationship as part of the official Australian YOE program, and be granted use of the logo, will need to apply to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra or the Australian Embassy in Tokyo.
