Australia House Charity Concert: Tenor Kazuaki Osawa to sing songs from all over the world

The International Culture Appreciation and Interchange Society, Inc. will host a charity concert for Australia House on 26 April at Reinanzaka Church in Akasaka, Tokyo. Proceeds from the concert will be used to support young Australian artists. Well-known tenor, Kazuaki Osawa, will showcase his expressive voice and impressive vocal range.

Yukigakoi installed at Australia House

Wooden snow fences – yukigakoi – have been installed at Australia House in Tokamachi, prior to the onset of the harsh Niigata winter. Niigata has some of the heaviest snowfalls in the world and yukigakoi are traditionally used in the Hokkaido, Tohoku and Hokuriku regions in Japan to prevent houses from being damaged by heavy snow. Australia House is now all ready for winter!

It's hard to imagine a more fitting opening for the new Australia House in rural Japan - a cultural project designed to foster collaboration between locals and resident Australians artists - than finishing the ceremony with a folk song from the nearest neighbour.

Free Wi-Fi Hotspot at Australia House

Free Wi-Fi Hotspots are available for use in key locations throughout the Echigo-Tsumari region for a period of three months during the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. The Hotspots have been provided jointly by Niigata Prefecture, Tokamachi City and Tsunan Town. A Hotspot is available at Australia House from 31 July. Visitors are encouraged to use these Hotspots to share their experiences with the world.

Opening ceremony at the new Australia House

News

Ambassador Bruce Miller officially opened the new Australia House in Urada, Tokamachi City in Niigata Prefecture, on Saturday 28 July 2012, on the eve of the opening of Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2012.

Together with Tokamachi City Mayor Yoshifumi Sekiguchi, Australia-Japan Foundation Chair Murray McLean, Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2012 General Producer Soichiro Fukutake, General Director Fram Kitagawa and Urada Community Council President Sadaichi Maruyama, Ambassador Miller cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the new house. Architect Andrew Burns and artists Brook Andrew and Andrew Rewald, along with friends, family and staff of the Australian Embassy, celebrated the opening of the striking new building with the people of the local Urada community.

Australia House, which incorporates a permanent artwork by Brook Andrew, is one of the main attractions of Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2012. It will serve as an artist residence and a base for cultural exchange between Australia and Japan.

Lecture by Mr Fram Kitagawa

In May 2011 Mr Fram Kitagawa, Director-General, Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and Setouchi International Art Festival, gave a talk at the Art Gallery of New South Wales about the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and Setouchi International Art Festival and how site specific artworks can build communities and change artists and audiences.
