Artist-in-Residence
The original Australia House was established in 2009 as a base to constantly-support the regional development in cooperation with the local people and volunteers at Urada, Tokamachi, Niigata based on Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale's theme. Since then, the Artist-in-Residence Programs have been conducted every year in Echigo-Tsumari by having artists and curators from Australia.
The Australian participants of the residence program stay for a long-term at Echigo-Tsumari without the knowledge of the language, culture or customs. Being supported by locals and volunteers during the residency period, participants are inspired by people's hospitality and great nature to create artworks and conduct presentations and workshops. Through these activities, the exchange between Japanese and Australian artists has increased and the network has been steadily building for continuing and developing the program.
Although the original Australia House collapsed in March 2011, the residence program from July to August 2011 and January to March 2012 (supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan, in Fiscal Year 2011) were carried on in different places of Echigo-Tsumari. After summer 2012, the program will continue at the new Australia House.
